Ladderbacks are believed to originate in the Middle Ages in Europe and their popularity rose significantly after the Protestant Reformation due to their plain style – a trait valued by early Protestants. Ladderbacks were brought across the Atlantic by the early American colonists and were embraced by all classes of colonists. They served as a dining chair, a sitting chair and even as pew chairs.
